چکیده

The watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai] cultivar Crimson Tide and 7 different gourd genotypes [Cucurbita maxima, C. moschata, Luffa cylindrica, Benincasa hispida, Lagenaria siceraria landraces (Skp and Birecik), and L. siceraria hybrid (FRGold)] with rootstock potential for watermelon were grown under saline conditions (0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 dS m) to investigate the responses of the gourd genotypes and watermelon to 30 days of salt stress. Plant main stem length, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, reduction in shoot dry weight, concentration of Na, Ca, and K in the leaves of the genotypes, and Ca/Na and K/Na ratios were investigated. Plant length, and shoot and root dry weight of the plants significantly decreased as salinity stress increased. Gourd genotypes responded significantly differently to all investigated parameters under saline conditions. All genotypes had better growth performance than watermelon, except for L. cylindrica and B. hispida. The gourd genotypes and watermelon showed significant differences under saline conditions, with respect to ion regulation. Sodium concentration in the leaves of all the genotypes increased in response to salt application. There was a remarkable increase in Na concentration in the leaves of L. cylindrica, whereas the lowest Na concentration was observed in Birecik, and C. maxima, B. hispida, and L. cylindrica accumulated more Na than watermelon and the other gourd genotypes did under saline conditions. Ca/Na and K/Na ratios were significantly reduced by salt treatment and the degree of decrease was dependent on genotype. Genotypes with higher Ca/Na and K/Na ratios produced more dry weight. Significant positive correlations were observed between plant biomass parameters, and Ca/Na and K/Na ratios, whereas strong negative correlations were observed between Na concentrations and shoot and root dry weight of the genotypes. Cucurbita and Lagenaria species were more tolerant to salinity stress than L. cylindrica, B. hispida, and watermelon.

Selenium enhances nutrient uptake and rosmarinic acid biosynthesis in Melissa officinalis L. under salinity stress

Salt stress is a serious problem facing plant growth and development. Selenium (Se) could improve plant growth and reduced stress. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine whether the Se application could alleviate salinity stress negative effects on Melissa officinalis L. Different salinity levels in this research were control (0), 50, 100 and 200 mM. Simultaneously, sodium selenate (Se) ...

Oxidative markers in five Iranian alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivars under salinity stress . Nader Chaparzadeh1* and Faramarz Mehrnejad2

Five alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) cultivars from different areas of Iran were evaluated for oxidative markers under salinity conditions. Plants were grown in hydroponic condition by Hoagland nutrient solution containing different amounts of NaCl (control, 50 and 100 mM). Relative growth rate, membrane stability, lipid peroxidation, proline, hydrogen peroxide and relative water contents were dete...

Application of grafting technique in watermelon cv. sugar baby (Citrullus lanatus cv. Sugar Baby ) under Salinity conditions

Salinity is a major environmental stress that causes severe damage to crop and horticultural products and also reduce plant biodiversity. Today with using grafting method overcome problem of soil salinity and ultimately, higher-quality products are yield of. In this study, water melon (cv. Sugar baby) was grafted on to the hybrid rootstocks of shintozwa (Cucurbita maxima×Cucurbita moschata), pe...

Response of Seed Yield, Its Components, Chlorophyll Content and Proline Concentration of Mung bean (Vigna radiate L.) To Apply Sulphate Potassium Fertilizer under Salinity Stress Situation

BACKGROUND: Among the environmental stresses soil salinity is a widespread environmental problem that has been found to affect more than 77 million hectares or 5% of the cultivable land of the universe. Potassium has a positive role in plant growth under saline conditions, because this element plays an essential role in photosynthesis, osmo regulatory adaptations of plant to wa...
